We travel to #Kauai which is the oldest (and wettest) island in #Hawaii. Kauai is known as the Garden Island and we visit the #Kalalau Trail, the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon State Park, Polihale State Park, and the Fern Grotto.
We would have to fly to Kauai, so we started in Columbus Ohio and headed to Chicago Illinois. We had a slight delay before heading to Los Angeles. On the flight we passed over the Grand Canyon and the beautiful landscape of the US.
Because of the delay in Chicago, the last flight to Hawaii for the day had already left, so we would have to wait until tomorrow to get to Kauai. So we made the most of it and went to Venice Beach. We walked down the boardwalk, saw Muscle Beach, checked out the Ocean Front Walk.
We boarded the flight to Kauai. It’s an approximately 6 hour flight to Hawaii from Los Angeles. We landed in Kauai at Lihue International Airport, rented a car, and headed into Princeville, Hawaii. We stayed the night at a hotel and prepared our equipment for backpacking the next day on the Na Pali coast. We were going to hike the Kalalau trail, one of the most famous on Hawaii.
We headed out to the trailhead of the Kalalau trail using a shuttle from Princeville. After starting on the Kalalau trail, the rain was intense and Kauai was living up to its reputation as being the wettest island. We made it to the Hanakapi’ai stream, the rain had drastically raised the water levels and the ranger closed the trail. We headed back to Princeville and planned out backup options for the rest of our trip. While eating lunch, we tried out a Maui Brewing Company beer. We checked out downtown Princeville, and then had some Poke for dinner.
The next day, we headed to Ho’opi’i Falls. These falls were featured in the movie Jurassic Park. We took a swim, and enjoyed the peaceful scenery of the Ho’opi’i Falls. Afterwards, we headed to a place we had heard about called Leong’s Meathouse. Unfortunately it was closed so we ended up eating at Bubba Burgers.
The next day, we were heading to Waimea Canyon State Park. On the way, we tried local Hawaiian food, Musubi, and Saimin ramen. At Waimea Canyon State Park, we first went to the overlook to look at Waimea Canyon. We then took a trail to see Waipo’o Falls. At Waipo’o Falls, we could see Hawaiian helicopter tours flying through the canyon. We eventually hiked out from Waipo’o Falls and headed to Polihale State Park.
At Polihale State Park we were going to stay the night at Polihale Beach. On the way, there was a 3 mile unpaved road that was very rough. Once we got there, we were treated to a beautiful Hawaiian beach sunset. It wasn’t long before it was dark at Polihale Beach, so we settled in for the night.
The next day we headed out and stopped at a local restaurant called Bobbie’s, where we had Japanese Hawaiian fusion food including Katsu, tuna, saimin, grilled spam, tempura, and more.
The last big hike on Kauai was going to be the Sleeping Giant, also known as Nou Nou Mountain. The Sleeping Giant Mountain on Kauai is known as the sleeping giant because from a distance, it somewhat looks like a person lying on their back. We took the back entrance up the Sleeping Giant.
For our final day in Kauai, Hawaii, we had one more location to visit, and that was the Fern Grotto on the Wailua River. It was a short and beautiful boat ride to the Fern Grotto, and the Wailua River was very peaceful.

Inspired Cuisine: Hawaii Rooted
In Hawaii, there is a belief that food not only feeds the body but also the connection between people and the land.
Whether it’s the fresh, locally grown fruit flavors of shave ice or the freshest catch from spearfishing on the coast, these local chefs have a passion for food that can be tasted in each dish and every bite.
Hawaii cuisine promotes a mindfulness about what’s being served. There is a story behind what is on your plate, and it all starts with the land. The warm sun, pacific winds, and rich soil all come together to create the ingredients in these delicious meals, and locals believe there is a kuleana (responsibility) to take only what you need and serve it with respect.
From early breakfast to dinner and drinks, you’ll be able to experience the intention and appreciation behind all the flavors Hawaii has to offer.

Soviet Russian Food Tour – $3.59 Cheapest Russian Canteen Meal!! | Saint Petersburg, Russia!

Thank you to Sergey from Real Russia (https://www.youtube.com/user/realrussiablog) for taking us on this Soviet Union / Russian Food tour of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was an amazing day. #Russia #RussianFood #SaintPetersburg
Pyshechnaya – This is one of the most legendary places to eat donuts in all of Russia. And they’ve preserved their style, recipe, and even price from the Soviet Union period. At first I thought just a couple of these Soviet donuts would be fine, but Sergey reassured me we needed a plate of them. He was right, they are easily the world’s most addictive donuts. And they only cost $0.23 per donut. Must visit when you’re in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Café Singer – House of the Books – Next since we were in the area, we went to Café Singer, a legendary cafe and restaurant. We mainly went to see the heritage and view. Food and coffee were alright, not the best.
Kvartirka – Soviet Restaurant – This was probably the best meal of the day. Kvartirka is again a Soviet / Russian restaurant set up like a house, and serving a mix of dishes popular during the Soviet Union period. I tried the borscht and the Chicken Kiev both of which were quite delicious and homely. An amazing meal and nice environment.
Stolovaya № 1 – Soviet Canteen – Finally to finish this Soviet Union food tour of Saint Petersburg, Russia, we ate at one of the cheapest meal options in the city – a Soviet style canteen. You walk through the line, choose the dishes you want, and pay for what you eat. It was a good experience, and delicious food. Total price – 229 RUB ($3.59)
Again, a huge thank you to Sergey from Real Russia (https://www.youtube.com/user/realrussiablog) for taking me on this food tour!

Tom from Chaseki Tea (https://www.facebook.com/chaseki.tea/) and Joel (https://goo.gl/5AkWm6)
This video begins an ultimate Thai food tour of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Get ready for some incredibly delicious Northern Thai food!
Khao soi (ข้าวซอย sometimes khao soy), or curry noodles, is one of the most popular Thai dishes in northern Thailand. It has a very unique history and though details are not completely known, most say that it originally was brought from Yunnan, China through Myanmar, adapting along the way, and finally reaching Chiang Mai, where it’s become of the iconic foods. In Thailand though, is where the dish accumulated coconut milk, which is found in most version now.
What is khao soi (ข้าวซอย)? Khao soi (ข้าวซอย) typically includes yellow egg noodles of some form, which are combined with a meat – usually beef or chicken (and I typically order beef as much as I can) – topped in coconut milk curry sauce, and finally sprinkled with coconut cream, and finally topped with crispy fried noodles.
There’s a massive debate over who serves the best khao soi in Chiang Mai, and I don’t think it will ever be resolved because everyone has a different taste. But along with the help of my friend Tom (from Chaseki tea shop in Chiang Mai: https://www.facebook.com/chaseki.tea/) and Joel, we set off to eat 5 bowls of khao soi in a row to share with you what we think is the best khao soi in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Here are the restaurants we ate at:
1. Khao Soi Islam (ร้านข้าวซอยอิสลาม https://goo.gl/maps/2WNVa3wKLkA2) – This is a longtime restaurant serving khao soi in what is known to be quite a traditional version. It’s a Halal restaurant, and their beef is amazing, but the curry is quite mild in spice.
Price – 60 THB ($1.82) for big bowl
2. Khao Soi Khun Yai (ร้านข้าวซอยคุณยาย https://goo.gl/maps/aRbmm7qkm3S2) – Next we went to Khao Soi Khun Yai (ร้านข้าวซอยคุณยาย), what was many years ago one of my favorite bowls, but this time?
Price – 40 THB ($1.22) per bowl
3. Khao Soi Loong Prakid Kad Gom (ข้าวซอย ลุงประกิจกาดก้อม https://goo.gl/maps/MhZKa5Thyew) – Many locals from Chiang Mai recommended I check out Khao Soi Loong Prakid Kad Gom (ข้าวซอย ลุงประกิจกาดก้อม), and it was amazing. The size, and the taste were spectacular.
Price – 40 THB ($1.22) per bowl
4. Khao Soi Mae Manee (ข้าวซอยแม่มณี https://goo.gl/maps/RycqaMT87B12) – About a 10 minute drive from the center of Chiang Mai we found ourselves in a neighborhood for our fourth bowl of khao soi at Khao Soi Mae Manee (ข้าวซอยแม่มณี). The Aunty was so friendly and I watched her as she assembled our bowls, amazing.
Price – 40 THB ($1.22) per bowl
5. Khao Soi Mae Sai (ร้านข้าวซอยแม่สาย https://goo.gl/maps/otMCykopQjr) – Finally, to end this best khao soi tour of Chiang Mai we went to Khao Soi Mae Sai (ร้านข้าวซอยแม่สาย), what is one of the most popular restaurants to eat khao soi in Chiang Mai.
Price – 50 THB ($1.52) per bowl
Make sure you watch the entire video to find out the best khao soi in Chiang Mai!
