Hawaii Foodtrip: It’s All Gravy! Loco Moco at Cafe 100
We stopped by Cafe 100 in Hilo, Hawaii (Big Island), and tried their Loco Moco, Lau Lau and Poi.
Café 100 is a great place to sample Loco Moco, a cheap and savory Hawaiian food concoction of rice, burger and egg all smothered in delicious gravy!
Forgive my grumpy demeanor! We were wiped from hiking down to Waipi’o Valley and making the long drive back to Hilo, and were looking for something cheap, easy and quick to sate our appetites. Café 100 fit the bill — for just under $20 we scored Loco Moco, Lau Lau, haupia pie and a giant orange slushie.
Loco Moco is Hawaiian comfort food and can be found all over the Big Island. In it’s simplest form, the dish consists of a base of rice topped with a burger and then and egg…all drenched in gravy. For anyone familiar with the Filipino fast food staple Jollibee, the dish is very similar to their Burger Steak. The egg is runny so the yolk can burst and mix in with all the fixins. Most places offer a variety of Loco Moco options, but we stuck with the simple, traditional version.
Also featured in this video is Lau Lau, a delicious, buttery pork dish that has been smoked in banana leaves. Café 100 probably isn’t the best place to get this on the Big Island, but it was definitely good 🙂
Oh, and there was also Poi, which made me make a sour face. I gotta be honest, the stuff was cold, slimy and terrible — I think you have to grow up eating it to like it!!!
Café 100 is an outdoor diner located in Hilo a block or two off of the main highway: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cafe+100/@19.7147336,-155.0767051,17.35z/
