Picadillo is definitely a dish with Spanish roots. When you search “Picadillo”, the first ones to come up are Cuban Picadillo recipes.

I’ve never had a Picadillo Cuban-style before, but I’ve had Filipino Picadillo and it’s the ultimate comfort food, filled with ingredients that make my tummy happy!

I’m using the Instant Pot in case you want to use your Instant Pot more often, but you can create this Filipino beef picadillo recipe in a normal pot over the stove.

The ingredients here are easily accessible across most grocery stores, so I hope you try this recipe at home! Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions, I’d love to help.

Coconut Shell Jet Flame!! INDIAN JUNGLE FOOD in Kozhikode! | Kerala, India!

KOZHIKODE, INDIA – In this Kerala Indian food videos series, we continued eating our way through Kozhikode, a city and area of Kerala, known for its food. Ebbin took us to a restaurant serving home-style (homely) food in the jungle. #Kozhikode #Kerala #India #IndianFood

One of the main unique things that Uncle cooks here is a rice flour pancake, fried on a clay pan, over fire – but the unique part about the fire, is that he only uses coconut shells – not coconut husks, but coconut shells. The shells give off a jet flame of heat, which really gives the fire a boost so that it ignites and hisses as he fires each of the pancakes.

In addition to these unique Kerala Indian pancakes, they also made a mix of cassava and a variety of different beans and coconut, to also be eaten as a staple. And we also had a chance to watch as they made another astoundingly delicious fish fry, and a fish curry.

After having a few cups of chai and a few rice flour pancakes, we then had our full meal – fish fry, fish curry, cassava mash, and the pancakes.

Eating on a banana leaf, in the jungle of Kerala, with great friends, and amazing hosts, made the experience even better. A jungle paradise in Kerala, India!

Total price – 460 INR ($6.45) for everything (6 people)

Roast Pork and Poke at Alicia’s Market – Honolulu, Hawaii

Alicia’s Market is a great local restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii. They serve all the good stuff. Get more details here: http://migrationology.com/2012/08/hawaii-food-alicias-market-honolulu/

For years now one of my absolute favorite restaurants to eat at in Honolulu is Alicia’s Market. I first came here a few years ago with my cousin, and we immediately loved the food selection they had. For anyone who loves properly local Hawaiian food and just Hawaii comfort food, Alicia’s Market is about as good as it can get. The restaurant is actually more of a convenience store, so it hardly looks like a restaurant from the outside. But once you park and go inside, you first walk through the aisles of convenience goods, which includes things like cans of SPAM and a selection of beverages, and then you’ll see the glorious cabinets of poke (raw fish), and to the left you’ll see the beautiful roast ducks and roast pork, and char siu, and all things meet. The menu is actually quite expensive, and over the years I’ve been able to sample cost quite a few of their dishes. But still I haven’t tasted everything, though I’m pretty sure everything is pretty good.

If you’re feeling in the mood to eat Hawaiian food, they have a delicious Hawaiian plate that includes poke, kalua pig, laulau, poi, among other things. They’ve also got the full range of Hawaiian plate lunches, a good selection of different poke (raw fish Hawaiian style), and finally that beautiful cabinet of roasted meat – everything I’ve had so far at Alicia’s Market is fantastic. On my latest visit to Alicia’s Market, I decided to order a combination plate, where I could choose the meet I wanted plus a few dishes to go with it. I decided to go for the roast pork, which I had never had there before, but which I had been eyeing all along. I also got some of their sweet onion poke, and a little side of kimchi, all paired with a few scoops of rice.

Alicia’s Market is only a takeaway restaurant, so they have no seating. You can either eat right then in your car, or you can drive somewhere to eat of course. I decided to head back into Honolulu, back to Ala Moana beach park, and find a nice place to sit there and eat. Unfortunately, while I was sitting by the beach, the flies started to attack my food and I, so I decided to just eat in the front seat of the car.

The plate lunch was incredible, the cubes of roast pork were nothing short of remarkable. There were incredibly fatty, but the crispy skin was insane. It was one of the crispiest pieces of pork I’ve had in a very long time. You definitely should not eat roast pork very often as it’s extremely fatty, but wow, occasionally it can be incredible. The sweet onion poke was pretty good, not quite as good as it had been the time before when I went. It was still good but I wished I had gotten the limu poke – has some seaweed in it – and that looked better the day I went. The kimchi added a nice final touch to the entire plate. Anyway, the food at Alicia’s Market in Honolulu, Hawaii, is awesome, and it’s a great place to pick up a hearty Hawaiian style meal before you go to the beach.
