Hawaii Travel is Cheap: Everything Else is Expensive

Hawaii Travel is Cheap: Everything Else is Expensive! Honestly, the packaged travel to Oahu, Hawaii is very cheap from the west coast of Canada and the USA, BUT the add on costs to your holiday of everything else actually makes it expensive. Let me explain:

The daily resort fees, the daily hotel parking costs, the daily airport parking costs back at home for your car, your kennel and house sitting fees, your travel medical costs, your currency conversion fees, you baggage and carry on fees, seating assignment fees, taxes and gratuities all can make your Hawaii vacation more expensive than you think!

It is a cash grab and adds significantly (cumulatively) to your trip to the Hawaiian islands.

Add the taxes and other surcharges and your daily fee for incidentals can exceed your daily expenses while traveling in Hawaii! And we have not even talked about the cost of food in Hawaii which is significantly more than the continental USA.

Tell me about the added costs to your holiday, whether it was in Hawaii or elsewhere…

With baggage fees of around $25-40, resort fees of $20-50 a day, hotel parking at $20-50 a day, airport parking at $15-30 a day, and all the other costs, you can easily spend more on other expenses per day than you would actually for just your hotel and airfare.

Keep your wheels on the ground!

FOOD REVIEW: Food in Hawaii – POKE BOWLS and Seafood at Tanioka’s in Waipahu, Hawaii!

Tanioka’s is a local hole in the wall food spot in Waipahu, Hawaii, that I’d been wanting to eat at for many years. Finally, we made the drive out to Waipahu (about 30 mins or so from Honolulu), ordered some food, and ate it on the beach.

Tanioka’s Seafood and Catering – Waipahu, Hawaii – It’s a local Hawaii food spot, known for their takeaway bentos and lunchboxes, poke, and musubi. They also have a full cabinet of different deep fried things – like fish patties, tempura, and mochiko chicken. When you walk in, you immediately stand in line and pass through the line ordering whatever you see that looks good. One thing you can be certain of is that all their fish is extremely fresh. I was very excited, but it’s one of those places that you order a bunch of food, but you always feel like you missed ordering something important.

Here’s most of what I ordered:

Spam musubi / deluxe spam musubi
Fish patties
Futomaki
Poke bowl with fried belly
Spicy ahi bento
Poi mochi

Total price – $67.90

It’s not cheap at all, but it’s typical Hawaii prices.

After getting the bags of food, I wanted to go eat somewhere along the beach. Since I don’t typically get out to the West Coast of Oahu very often, we decided to drive out to Kahe Point. The views were spectacular and we walked around for a little while, but there wasn’t a good grassy area to sit, so we continued on to Ko Olina. Ko Olina is a resort and golf course area, which amazing calm lagoons and grassy areas, perfect to dig into a Hawaii beach feast from Tanioka’s!

Walking Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

Walking Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

High-rise hotels line the shore in Waikiki, a vibrant neighborhood known for its popular surf beach. Designer fashion stores line Kalakaua Avenue and nearby streets, and the area buzzes after dark with waterside cocktail bars, fine dining and Kuhio Beach hula shows. Honolulu Zoo is home to Komodo dragons and wandering peacocks, while parrotfish and urchins inhabit Waikiki Aquarium’s reef exhibit.
