Musubi, a slice of pan fried SPAM, a block of rice, and then wrapped with roasted seaweed is a local favourite in the islands of Hawaii. I discovered this “ono” (delicious) snack (more like meal) during my university days in Laie, Hawaii. It will definitely “break da mouth” but not your bank.
Recipe and method:
Here’s what you need:
1 cup cooked short-grain white rice (add 4 tsp of white vinegar while boiling)
1 can (12ounce) of SPAM or luncheon meat
4 sheets nori/roasted seaweed
60ml oyster sauce
60ml light soy sauce
3 tbsp sugar
1tsp white sesame seeds
Method:
1. In a separate bowl, mix together oyster sauce, light soy sauce, sugar and sesame seeds and stir thoroughly until the sugar is completely dissolved.
2. Slice SPAM lengthwise into 8 slices, or desired thickness.
3. In your flat container, line the SPAM slices and marinate for 2-3 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, cut the nori sheet into strips of equal size – wide enough to wrap around the SPAM and rice (like a blanket)
5. In a large frying pan, drizzle and heat oil on low to medium heat and cook the SPAM slices for 3-4 minutes per side.
6. With the makeshift mould, add and pack rice into the can, 1/3 of the way up. Then top with a slice of fried SPAM. Take the block of rice with SPAM out of the mould. Lay it on a flat surface and wrap the nori around. Seal the edges with water. Enjoy!
